Will human-created content survive in new Internet economy?
The Google and OpenAI presentations this week were quite impressive. One thing that is becoming increasingly clear is that both giants are pushing for AI-powered search engines that provide direct answers, potentially bypassing traditional websites. While convenient for users, this shift could significantly impact the internet’s economic landscape.
For years, Google has directed traffic to external websites, allowing them to build revenue models on user visits. This, in turn, fueled the creation of high-quality (in some cases, hah) new content. If users stop visiting these sites due to AI-generated answers, website owners could face financial difficulties. This could trigger a drop in human-generated content, potentially replaced by a majority of synthetic content created by AI.
New search engines with AI might change how we find things online. But will this be good or bad? Will it make it easier to get info, or will it just show us stuff we already agree with? Hm..🤔
