Shoshin: beginner’s mindset

I’d like to share an idea I discovered last year that has been helping me a lot — Shoshin, or the beginner’s mind

In the 1990s, Phil Jackson took the concept of Shoshin from Zen Buddhism and made it a big part of the success of the greatest NBA team of that era, the Chicago Bulls.

Shoshin is about staying open and curious, approaching everything as if you were a beginner. It’s about seeing things without judgment and keeping an open mind.

While experts are often limited by their knowledge and stuck in old ways of doing things, beginners are more willing to explore new ideas, try fresh approaches, and discover unexpected solutions.

It can be hard for the ego (especially for experienced people) to stay in that beginner’s mindset every day. But with the world changing so quickly, this mindset isn’t just helpful – it’s essential… that’s how I see it.
